Yesterday saw the first CandaDrome event at the Pacific Cinematheque.

What an amazing all-dayer, with friends, filmmakers, and a whole array of folks new to the Shivers Film Society in Vancouver. Seeing all the films up on the big screen – Jennifer Campbell’s Hike, Kody Zimmermann’s vampire flick The Familiar, Thomas Newman’s Bong of the Dead (pretty self-explanatory) and Vincenzo Natali’s Canadian cult opus Cube, along with the awesome filmmakers’ Q&A, made for a pretty amazing day. We did get enough people in the door to break even, so we at the Shivers Film Society were thankful for that.

We’ve got three more events lined up over the next month, and if we’re going to continue the new tradition, we need some butts in seats. Come on out to the next one, our first SECRET DOUBLE FEATURE, on Tuesday, February 5th, 7pm at the Pacific Cinematheque – featuring David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive! Cheap brewskis / vino – come and celebrate film with us! And keep us going!

Very truly,

The Shivers Film Society.

Happy New Year!

JAN-FEB FINAL

…from the Shivers Film Society! See you in 2013!!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Shivers…

Rabid_SantaIt’s been a great year of success and trials, from launching our new films society in London, England this May, where we screened some fantastic Canadian independent features, including Deaden, $lasher$, The Hard Cut, Catholic Cheerleaders for Satan, and the short film The Red Hours (which should be premiering in Vancouver next year), to the trial attempts at retro double-features in the somewhat hilariously decrepit Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver.

The new year is shaping up to be pretty awesome, with the launching of Shivers’ CANADADROME at the Pacific Cinematheque this January the 27th – we have local independent features, shorts, local filmmakers in attendance, and some classic Canadian cult films! We’re following this event up with a few more cinematic (and liquor-licensed) offerings throughout February – so keep an eye out for the advert in the upcoming Cinematheque magazine circulating around Vancouver (Jan/Feb) and of course, check back here often for news & updates!

Thanks to everyone who supported us this year – the audiences, the members, The Roxy in London, the distribution companies, friends and family in London and Vancouver, the film schools, and the venues and their managers who all took the time to chat with me at length about this slightly insane endeavor. It’s thanks to all of you that we’re still going!

Ho – Ho – Ho and Happy New Year.

-Shivers Film Society

Final week of “UNCUT” screenings at the BFI…

This is the last week of the “UNCUT” programming at the BFI in London. Check it out, screenings of Irreversable, This is England, and Robert Aldrich’s The Killing of Sister George. You might want to book online now, some of these screenings are nearly sold out already. Have fun! Wish I were there…

Don’t forget, “The Devils” Director’s Cut at the BFI this week…

This week as the BFI rolls out their “Uncut” programming…

Nov. 9th: Ken Russell’s The Devils (the full director’s cut)

Nov. 10th: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Nov. 11th:  Sick – The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist

Nov. 13th: Enter the Dragon (sweet!)

Heeeeeeere’s Johnny!

This Halloween at the BFI

Scary.

This November there’s something awesome brewing at the BFI in London…

Starting this November 1st, the British Film Institute is bringing to London its “Uncut” programme – a series of films screenings, including Ken Russell’s own director’s cut of The Devils (the only place you’re apt to see this, as Warner Brother restricted the BFI’s DVD release several months ago), Canadian auteur David Cronenberg’s smash-em-up sexual melodrama Crash,  John Waters’ Pink Flamingos, Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, Steven Spielberg’s Temple of Doom and tons of others – check out the month-long programme HERE!

Shivers-approved.

Frankenhooker cancelled due to venue clash

Sorry, Mr. Henenlotter, Ms. Mullen, Mr. Lorinz, the October 3rd screening of your hilarious and brilliant “Frankenhooker” has had to be cancelled, I’m afraid.

After weeks of working with The Rickshaw to program a duo of screenings in Vancouver, after several re-workings of the art and the online invites in conjunction with The Rickshaw, and despite my adamant pursuit and obtainment of their final say-so and event confirmation, the folks at The Rickshaw decided, after the event was put out there and the invites rolled out, that they didn’t want to play the film after all. While in the interest of non-censorship they never outright told us to change the film in question (although they certainly suggested and made us aware of their feelings on the matter), The Rickshaw has refrained any form of advertising, or even mention of this event, which is just a recipe for failure. I indeed fully explored the idea of changing venues, but even changing the film, is a matter of time, energy, and money, all of which, I’d finally decided, would be much more constructively spent on focusing on the new series of screenings from the Shivers Film Society…

CanadaDrome and our Secret Double Features, which will launch this winter at the Pacific Cinematheque downtown, Vancouver (on Howe St. to be exact), where we will have complete control of the programing and our scheduling.

It’s time to move ahead, and I truly hope to see you all come this January, and we thank you dearly for all the support so far.

-Vince.

Co-Director, Shivers Film Society.

Our very good friends CLASSIC HORROR CAMPAIGN bring you a double-bill of Banned British Features tomorrow for Scala Beyond in London, UK!

Sunday 2 September | 4.00pm | £6
Classic Horror Campaign presents ISLAND OF LOST SOULS/CORRUPTION
Roxy Bar & Screen | 128-132 Borough High Street, London | SE1 1LB

More info…

The Classic Horror Campaign, Cyberschizoid, Scare Sarah and Filmbar70 return to The Roxy Bar & Screen. Once again we join forces with the Scala Beyond season to present our homage to the much loved cinema. Recapture those halcyon days of the old BBC2 Saturday night horror double bills in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere at one of London’s premiere boutique cinema venues.

ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932)
An obsessed scientist conducts profane experiments in evolution, eventually establishing himself as the self-styled demigod to a race of mutated, half-human abominations.
+
CORRUPTION (1968)
A respected surgeon disfigures his beautiful model wife in an accident and resolves to restore her beauty. He develops a technique which involves the use of fluid from the pituitary gland and embarks on a killing spree to obtain more of the fluid. As events spin more and more out of control, carnage ensues and the dead bodies start piling up…

Plus look out for some superb horror giveaways and prizes.

The Classic Horror Campaign was set up to persuade the BBC to bring back their iconic Saturday night classic horror double bills which were so popular in the 1970′s and early 1980′s. The campaign has grown from an online petition and now includes this website, a Facebook Page, Twitter account and a regular series of classic horror double bill screenings around the UK.

A couple more this week in London, UK…

…Starting with Filmbar 70′s A Very British Apocalypse…

Tuesday 28 August | 7.00pm | £5
Filmbar70 presents A Very British Apocalypse: NO BLADE OF GRASS/THREADS
Roxy Bar & Screen | 128-132 Borough High Street, London | SE1 1LB

More info…

Societies are sundered and man becomes animal in a double bill that celebrates Britain’s despairing take on the art of collapse. From the colonial crises of H. G. Wells to the transformed landscapes of J. G. Ballard, our parables have been saturated by the impending doom of imminent catastrophe. Filmbar70 presents two visions infused by the sensibility of the kitchen sink – the ‘70s eco plight of NO BLADE OF GRASS and the ‘80s nuked nightmare of THREADS, the most horrific vision of radioactive desolation put to screen.

So, make yourself comfy and welcome to a world where the remnants of civilisation have been swept aside and man competes in the savage wasteland of his own making. Just keep telling yourself “this could never really happen…”

And the following day, VTSS has an Ozploitation double-header!

Wednesday 29 August | 7.00pm | £6
VTSS presents: BAD BOY BUBBY and NIGHT OF FEAR
Roxy Bar and Screen | 128-132 Borough High Street, London | SE1 1LB

More info…

VTSS. present the psychotic sounds of Australian Genre Film – a double bill of noisy innovation in Terry Bourke’s NIGHT OF FEAR (1972) & Rolf de Heer’s notorious BAD BOY BUBBY.
The re-appraisal of alternative Australian cinema does more than celebrate the home spun, handmade aesthetic of the exploitation film – it tells us something about the way staple genres are appropriated and re-interpreted by filmmakers at the mercy of their environment. But Australian genre movies aren’t exclusively concerned with the visual depiction of their unique landscapes. The sound of Australia, natural and man made, helps us map out the cinematic terrain too.
Syd Butterworth’s experiments in soundscapes subsume the spoken word in NIGHT OF FEAR and in BAD BOY BUBBY, binaural trickery is used to depict Nicholas Hope’s unforgettable introduction to the “real” world for the first time…
Oz cinema is so much more than hi-octane stuntmen and girls in white petticoats… Join us at The Roxy Bar and Screen on Wednesday 29th August for the first of two events that encourage you to open your ears and experience the terrifying noise, and eerie silence, of life Down Under…
You can visit http://scalabeyond.com/ for more info and the full summer/fall schedule.

Next up in London, UK’s “Scala Beyond” season…

Actually, Scala Beyond kicked off a couple of days ago in London. This year, our fantastic friends from across the water — Filmbar 70-, VTSS, and the Classic Double Horror Campaign — are all involved in the city-wide programming celebrating the legacy of the infamous Scala Cinema.

VTSS is next up at bat…

Saturday 25 August | 4.00pm | £3
VTSS. presents Everything is Terrible’s DOGGIEWOGGIEZ! POOCHIEWOOCHIEZ! UK Premiere!
The Big Red | 30 Deptford Church Street, London | SE8 4RZ

More info…

As part of this years Scala Beyond, VTSS. is proud to present the UK Premiere of EiT’s insane remake of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s THE HOLY MOUNTAIN, a found footage mash up, made ENTIRELY with Dogs!

In support, we’ll be screening Mark Lewis’ excellent 2006 documentary:
THE STANDARD OF PERFECTION: SHOW CATS

…and we’ll be doing this all in a customised 40ft Cinema Truck.

Come early (seating is limited) and enjoy delicious pizzas on the double decker bus – that’s right, an old Routemaster that’s been transformed into London’s hippest pizzeria, or enjoy a cold beer in the garden as we spin suitably cat and dog-tastic tunes to kick start the Bank Holiday Weekend in (doggy) style!

VTSS. (aka videotapeswapshop) is our pleasantly unhinged tribute to the peculiar world of genre film. We’re equally interested in both the ridiculous and the sublime efforts that have emerged from the depths of the genre pool. Click here to see their Declaration.

Cinema Saloon to resume in October… Shivers Film Fest to launch in Vancouver

I wish we could just juggle every possible thing to make the August programming for Cinema Saloon happen, but alas, there is just not enough time we can cram into the second half of summer. The Cinema Saloon will resume in full in October at the Rickshaw in Vancouver, meanwhile…

The Shivers Film Society will be focusing on creating the follow-up to “The Influence of the Canadian Tax Shelter” film fest that went on in London, UK just this past May. This would mark the official launch of the Shivers Film Fest in Vancouver, and in Canada, for that matter. We’ll have the programming nearing finalization by the end of August, please stay tuned for future details. We do know that the Shivers Film Fest in Vancouver will offer a taste of Cronenberg, a few more surprises from the infamous Tax Shelter Period, and some killer Canadian indie genre films like Thomas Newman’s kick-ass Bong of the Dead and Jennifer Campbell’s short flick Hike.

And yes, submissions are open to Canadian genre filmmakers (all lengths accepted).

Cinema Saloon Interuptus! (No screening this week / next week)

We’re very sorry to have to report that the Thursday Nights’ Cinema Saloon has been suspended temporarily due to unforeseen circumstances. We’re trying very had to re-launch in time for the August programming, but please stay tuned to keep posted of the goings-on. Right now this definitely affects both the Spaghetti Double Feature (July 19th) and the Dirty Harry Double Bill (July 26th).

Check back with us over the next couple of weeks! We’ll keep updating.
